Konark Temple

The Sun Temple of Konark, often called as the Black Pagoda, was constructed in the mid thirteenth century by Raja Narasinghs Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty. It is an ample testament to the artistic glory of the time. Conceived in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on 12 pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels--after the mythical seven horse chariot of Sun God--the temple was unique in its architecture and implementation.
The Konark temple is widely known not only for its architectural grandeur but also for the intricacy and profusion of sculptural work. The entire temple has been conceived as a chariot of the sun god with 24 wheels, each about 10 feet in diameter, with a set of spokes and elaborate carvings. Seven horses drag the temple. Two lions guard the entrance, crushing elephants.and is also otherwise popularly known as Konaditya and Black Pagoda.

A brilliant chronicle in stone, you will be astounded to see the sublime depiction of every aspect of life along with the erotic imaginary in infinite forms. Notice the twenty-four wheels that represent the hours of the day. You cannot miss the richly ornamented dancing hall and the elaborately sculpted religious scenes. Check out the images of Mahishasuramardini (Shakti cult), Jagannatha (Vaishnava cult) and a Linga (Shiva cult) enshrined in the temple. These sculptures are the audible examples of religious tolerance that was existent then.
Try to catch a glimpse of the three images of Sun God, they are positioned in a manner to reflect the rays of the sun at dawn, noon and dusk.
The complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. It is believed to be the second most visited historical site in Egypt; only the Giza Pyramids near Cairo receive more visits. gompa
